Welcome, ChocoLovers!

You’re likely in attendance because you’re about to enjoy one (or many!) of the elements of our Nutcracker Suite. Mamma Wonka and I are so very pleased and grateful you’ve chosen to join us on this very special day!

The below creations were sold individually and in various sets, all choreographed to what has now become a holiday classic around the world.

OUVERTURE

The Nutcracker (Russian: Щелкунчик[a]) is an 1892 two-act classical ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, set on Christmas Eve at the foot of a Christmas tree in a child's imagination featuring a Nutcracker doll.

The plot is an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' 1844 short story The Nutcracker, itself a retelling of Hoffmann's 1816 short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The ballet's first choreographer was Marius Petipa, with whom Tchaikovsky had worked earlier on The Sleeping Beauty.

Today, Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Among other things, the score is noted for its use of the Celesta, an instrument the composer discovered in Paris, whose clear, bell-like tone was perfectly fitted to The Nutcracker’s fairy-tale ambience.

In the Celesta’s ethereal notes, Tchaikovsky recognized the “voice” of his Sugar Plum Fairy, and he immediately wrote to his publisher, asking that the instrument be acquired for the performance.

ACT I

THE CHRISTMAS TREE

The Stahlbaums and their children, Clara, Franz, and Fritz, are hosting their annual Christmas Eve party at their home. Family and friends have come to decorate the Christmas Tree, as well as enjoy the party. As in every home at Christmas, the tree is central and thus, we begin our story here.

THE COCO NUTCRACKER

When the party begins, presents are given out to the children one of them a wooden nutcracker doll, which the other children ignore. Clara immediately takes a liking to it!

As The Coco Nutcracker was the very first Nutcracker Truffle Gnosis created, which sold out multiple times and gave us the initial momentum for this collection, it represents the Nutcracker first given to Clara by Drosselmeyer, who you’ll meet next…

Fritz accidentally breaks the Nutcracker…

HERR DROSSELMEYER

Clara is heartbroken, but Drosselmeyer - the councilman, magician, clockmaker, and talented toymaker who made the Nutcracker - fixes it, much to everyone's relief.

Drosselmeyer is dark, complex, and mysterious - the maker, giver, and healer of the Nutcracker itself. Hence, our “Everything Will Be OK” filling!

As the children grow weary, the guests depart, and Drosselmeyer disappears as mysteriously as he had arrived. Clara carefully places her beloved nutcracker under the Christmas tree before the family retires to bed.

The house grows dark, and Clara steals back into the room to look at her precious nutcracker. The room is filled with the magical Christmas Spirit. As she falls back asleep on the couch, her thoughts are filled with exciting, happy memories of the Christmas Eve party and dancing dolls.

THE MOUSE KING

All too soon her thoughts are interrupted by her menacing brother Fritz. He calls mice from everywhere and leads them in a chase after Clara. Before her eyes, Fritz is transformed into the Mouse King. Clara finds herself in the midst of a battle between an army of gingerbread soldiers and the mice, led by their king.

THE BATTLE

Clara finds herself in the midst of a battle between an army of gingerbread soldiers and the mice, led by their king. Clara calls Drosselmeyer, who summons the toy soldiers, but the Mouse King and his army are too strong for them.

Drosselmeyer transforms the wooden nutcracker doll into a lifelike soldier!

CLARA’S SLIPPER

Clara, determined to help her nutcracker, strikes the Mouse King with her slipper.

Thanks to her bravery, the mice are defeated and the battle is won!

The mice retreat and the nutcracker is transformed into a human prince.

THE PINE FOREST

The Nutcracker Prince leads Clara through the moonlit night to a pine forest. The fantastical scene is set with this bar - colorful, bright, and vibrant.

Snowflakes dance around them, beckoning them on to the Nutcracker’s kingdom as the first act ends.

ACT II

THE LAND OF SWEETS

Clara and the Prince travel to the beautiful Land of Sweets, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Prince's place until his return. He recounts for her how he had been saved from the Mouse King by Clara and transformed back into himself.

In honor of the young heroine, a celebration of sweets from around the world is produced: chocolate from Spain, coffee from Arabia, tea from China, and candy canes from Russia all dance for their amusement; Marzipan shepherdesses perform on their flutes; a string of beautiful flowers performs a waltz.

LE GRAND PAS DE DEUX

To conclude the night, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier perform a dance. A final waltz is performed by all the sweets, after which the Sugar Plum Fairy ushers Clara and the Prince down from their throne. He bows to her, she kisses Clara goodbye, and leads them to a reindeer-drawn sleigh. It takes off as they wave goodbye to all the subjects who wave back.
