OUVERTURE
The Nutcracker (Russian: ะฉะตะปะบัะฝัะธะบ[a]) is an 1892 two-act classical ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, set on Christmas Eve at the foot of a Christmas tree in a child's imagination featuring a Nutcracker doll.
The plot is an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' 1844 short story The Nutcracker, itself a retelling of Hoffmann's 1816 short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The ballet's first choreographer was Marius Petipa, with whom Tchaikovsky had worked earlier on The Sleeping Beauty.
Today, Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Among other things, the score is noted for its use of the Celesta, an instrument the composer discovered in Paris, whose clear, bell-like tone was perfectly fitted to The Nutcrackerโs fairy-tale ambience.
In the Celestaโs ethereal notes, Tchaikovsky recognized the โvoiceโ of his Sugar Plum Fairy, and he immediately wrote to his publisher, asking that the instrument be acquired for the performance.
If you have not yet seen the Nutcracker, here is a 10 minute synopsis:
